The Local Area...

Threlkeld village is a wonderful place to be based if you wish to explore the Northern Lake District. This former mining village has great character, and is situated at the foot of Blencathra, 3.5 miles east of Keswick and north of St Johns in the Vale.

The village is located just off the A66 between Keswick & Penrith (for details see the find us page) and has a small post office and two public houses. The Horse and Farrier, serving local Jennings beers, has an AA rosette for its food and is very popular with locals and tourists alike, while the Salutation Inn is a typical Lakeland Inn serving traditional pub meals and real ale.

Local activities are plentiful, whatever type of recreation you enjoy. You can forget the car once you are here as the local walking is superb and not to be missed.

For golfers we are just a stones throw away from the challenging and picturesque Keswick Golf Club course, and an easy drive to the area's other best known clubs.

For cyclists riding the well known Coast to Coast (C2C) route from Workington to Sunderland, The Hollies is a perfect place to stop on the main route.

If you enjoy boating or lake fishing Derwentwater is a shore drive away with its Keswick Launch Service for exploring the lake and Derwentwater Marina for boat hire and launching.

If you enjoy watching birds of prey in the wild then the Ospreys close to Bassenthwaite Lake will be a must. Check out the Lake District Osprey Project website for further information.

There are many other attractions to enjoy too, including the Theatre By The Lake in Keswick, the Pencil Museum, Honister Slate Mine, Cars of the Stars and Rheged Discovery Centre.

There is a regular hourly bus service through Threlkeld to Keswick and Penrith (X5 service) which runs until late into the evening making a night out in Keswick or Penrith without driving a possibility - ask Sue or Andy for an up-to-date timetable or check the Keswick Information website.

Whatever you choose to do, we're happy to offer help and advice, to ensure that you get the most out of your time in the North Lakes.

The perfect location for a short break "away from it all" in the Lake District National Park.
